EcoFlow Portable Power Stations
The complete guide for campers, caravanners, tiny home owners and off-grid households
What Are EcoFlow Portable Power Stations?
EcoFlow portable power stations are self-contained battery units with built-in inverters, multiple AC outlets, USB ports and DC outputs. They store electricity from solar panels, mains power or a car alternator, then deliver it cleanly and quietly wherever you need it — no fuel, no fumes, no noise.
Unlike traditional generators, EcoFlow units use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or lithium-ion battery technology, giving you thousands of charge cycles, fast recharge times and a compact form factor. Models range from compact 256Wh units for weekend campers through to 3.6kWh+ home backup systems that can run a household for days.
Who Are They Suitable For?
Weekend Campers
Compact models like the EcoFlow RIVER 2 are ideal for charging phones, running a small fridge and powering lights over a weekend away. Lightweight enough to carry in a backpack or toss in the boot.
Caravanners & Grey Nomads
Mid-range units such as the DELTA 2 or DELTA Pro pair perfectly with rooftop solar to keep a 12V fridge, lighting, CPAP machine and devices running indefinitely on the road.
Tiny Home & Cabin Owners
Larger systems with expandable battery modules can power a full tiny home — fridge, lighting, water pump, laptop and even a small air conditioner — entirely off-grid.
Emergency & Backup Power
Keep one charged at home for blackouts. EcoFlow units can power essential appliances, medical equipment and communications gear when the grid goes down.
Camping and Caravan Use
For camping and caravanning, a portable power station replaces the need for a noisy petrol generator. You can run a 12V or 240V compressor fridge, charge all your devices, power LED lighting and run a small fan — all from a single unit sitting quietly in your van or under your awning.
EcoFlow's X-Stream fast charging technology means many units can recharge from flat to 80% in under an hour from mains power at a caravan park. Combined with solar panels, you can top up during the day and run through the night without ever needing shore power.
- A 1kWh unit comfortably runs a 40–50L compressor fridge for 24 hours with solar top-up.
- Use the DC output for 12V appliances to maximise efficiency — DC-to-DC is more efficient than DC-to-AC conversion.
- EcoFlow's app lets you monitor battery level, input and output in real time from your phone.
Off-Grid and Tiny Home Use
For permanent or semi-permanent off-grid living, EcoFlow's expandable systems — particularly the DELTA Pro with Smart Extra Batteries — can store substantial capacity through expandable battery modules of energy. Paired with a solar array, this is enough to run a modest tiny home or cabin entirely off-grid through most of the year.
The EcoFlow Smart Home Panel allows integration with your home's circuit breaker, enabling automatic switchover from grid to battery during outages. For tiny homes, the combination of solar input, battery storage and a quiet inverter output makes EcoFlow one of the most practical all-in-one solutions available.
- Expandable battery modules — add capacity as your needs grow
- Smart Home Panel integration for whole-home backup
- Silent operation — no noise, no exhaust, no fuel storage
- App-based monitoring and scheduling
Solar Charging
All EcoFlow portable power stations support solar charging via MC4 connectors. The DELTA series accepts up to 800W–1600W of solar input depending on the model, allowing very fast recharge times on sunny days. EcoFlow also manufactures its own rigid and flexible solar panels, which are designed to work seamlessly with their power stations.
When sizing your solar setup, aim for enough panel wattage to replace your average daily consumption. A 400W panel array in full sun for 4–5 hours will generate around 1.6–2kWh — enough to run a fridge, lighting and device charging for a full day.
- EcoFlow's MPPT charge controller is built in — no separate charge controller needed.
- Flexible panels work well on curved caravan roofs; rigid panels deliver better efficiency on flat surfaces.
- Shade even one panel in a series string significantly reduces total output — use parallel wiring where possible.
Running Fridges, Lights, Pumps and Appliances
EcoFlow power stations can run a wide range of 240V and 12V appliances. Here's a general guide to what different capacity units can handle:
Things to Check Before Buying
Choosing the right EcoFlow unit comes down to matching the battery capacity, inverter size and solar input to your actual needs. Here are the key specifications to compare:
Battery Capacity (Wh)
This is the total energy storage. Divide your daily consumption in watts by your average hours of use to estimate your daily Wh needs. Add 20–30% buffer for efficiency losses and cloudy days. A weekend camper might need 500–1000Wh; a full-time off-gridder may need 3kWh+.
Inverter Size (W)
The inverter converts stored DC power to 240V AC. Make sure the inverter wattage exceeds the combined running load of everything you plan to run simultaneously. EcoFlow's X-Boost technology on some models can run appliances rated up to 2200W even on units with a 1000W inverter — worth checking.
Solar Input (W)
Higher solar input means faster recharge on sunny days. If you're relying on solar as your primary charging source, match your panel array to the unit's maximum solar input. The DELTA Pro accepts up to 1600W of solar — enough to fully recharge in 1.5–2 hours of good sun.
Appliance Starting Loads
Motors — fridges, pumps, air conditioners — draw 2–5x their running wattage for a fraction of a second on startup. Always check the starting (surge) wattage of your appliances, not just the running wattage, and ensure your inverter can handle it. EcoFlow publishes surge ratings for all models.
Battery Chemistry
EcoFlow uses both LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) batteries depending on the model. LFP offers more charge cycles (3000+) and better thermal stability — ideal for permanent installations. NMC offers higher energy density for a given weight — better for portable use.
Expandability
If your needs might grow, choose a model that supports extra battery modules. The DELTA Pro ecosystem allows you to add up to 25kWh of storage — far more cost-effective than buying a new unit later.
